Tales from the Simpson

21 July 09
Change of plans in the Simpson. First 20km direct to geographic centre was impossible for me to ride. Some dunes taking three carries to breach. Would have run out of water if I had continued. So I'm now doing QAA/French Line (FYI http://www.exploroz.com/TrekNotes/Deserts/Simpson_Desert_French_Line.aspx ). Eyre Creek is beautiful in flood but flies to die from! Big dunes yesterday were very ridable wtih 4 inch tyres. Today very slow on small dunes due to wind.

There is little protection from the sun and wind out here. I never want to be here in summer! Simpson sand is like talc very hard work but rewarding on a pushbike!

Great that you gave it 20kms and chose the incredibly difficult over the impossible. Again, fantastic effort Russ !!
